Summary
Oil painting on oak panel, The Temptation of Christ, in the manner of Joachim Patinir (Dinant c.1480 - Antwerp 1524). A rocky landscape with a river in the middle distance. On top of a grass-covered rock in the foreground stands Christ, wearing a blue robe, and the Devil, a bearded old man in a red cloak and hood. They are seen again on top of a precipitous rock towards the left.

Mr L. Rosenthal, 1934; his sale, Sotheby's, 29 April 1937, lot 119, repd.; bought by Langton Douglas; from whom acquired by Lord Bearsted; given with Upton House to the National Trust by Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted (1882 – 1948) shortly before his death.
