Caption
Archibald Montgomerie succeeded to the title as 13th Earl on the death of his paternal grandfather in 1819, and was created 1st Earl of Winton in 1859. He later married Teresa Newcomen, by whom he had three sons and a daughter. He married secondly, Lady Adela Capel, only daughter of the 6th Earl of Essex, by whom he had two daughters. Eglington Castle, which was rebuilt by the 12th Earl, is shown in the background. Archibald used it as a background for a much-celebrated tournament in 1839.

Oil painting on canvas, Archibald William Montgomerie, 13th Earl of Eglinton PC, KT (1812-1861), as a boy on horeseback by Sir Henry Raeburn RA (Stockbridge 1756 – Edinburgh 1823), circa 1818. A full-length portrait of a small boy, he is seated astride a pony to left, and turns to face the spectator; he wears a yellow dress and dark cap; in the background is Eglinton Castle, which was rebuilt by the 12th Earl of Eglinton.

In the collection of the sitter's stepfather, Sir Charles Lamb, 2nd Bt. (1785-1860), through marriage to Lady Mary Montgomerie; by descent to his son, Sir Archibald Lamb, 3rd Bt.; in his posthumous sale at Christie's, 28 April 1922, lot 48; purchased by Sir Marcus Samuel, 1st Viscount Bearsted; given to the National Trust by Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted, in 1948.
