Summary
Oil painting on mahogany panel, A Falconer, by James William Giles, RSA (Glasgow 1801 – Aberdeen 1870), signed and dated J. Giles S.A. 1833. A full-length portrait of a falconer, allegedly employed by the Duke of Leeds, standing in a clearing among trees, wearing a uniform of long green coat and tall hat, with lures hung over his shoulder, a hooded peregrine on his gloved left hand, and three others on blocks at the right. Probably the picture exhibited at the British Institution, 1831 (no.169), 2 ft. 3in x 2 ft.

Duke of Leeds, Hornby Castle; acquired by Lord Bearsted from Harold Davis in 1930 for £45; given with Upton House to the National Trust by Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted (1882 – 1948) shortly before his death, in 1948
