Summary
Oil painting on oak panel, Sir John Cutts, British (English) School, circa 1595, inscribed: To Sr John Cutts: In sea of thought that ebbe and flow,/Unmov'd,/My love to you is, let mee soe/Bee lov-d. A bust-length portrait of a young man, in a painted oval, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a white shirt with wide transparent lawn collar, his left hand resting on a scarlet sash which crosses his right shoulder. The inscription is illustrated by a view of waves dashing against a rock.

Anonymous sale, Christie's, 24 July 1936, lot 106: bought by Freeman; date of acquisition by Lord Bearsted unrecorded; given with Upton House to the National Trust by Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted (1882 – 1948), in 1948, shortly before his death
