Summary
Saucer dish, part of a Chelsea tea service with well painted Chinoiserie figures of musicians in panels edged with elaborate gilt trellis work and reserved on a claret ground. Gold anchor marks. 1760 (circa). A similar service was among the Chelsea proprietor’s remaining stock, sold by Mr. Christie, on February 17, 1770, lot 70, ‘A very curious and matchless tea and coffee equipage, crimson and gold, most inimitably enamell’d in figures from the designs of Watteau, consisting of twelve tea-cups with handles and saucers, six coffee ditto, teapot and stand, slop-bason, sugar dish, and cream ewer 43l.1s.’ (Nightingale 1881, p. 13).
