Summary
Tapestry, wool and silk, Biblical Scene, c. 1575-1600. On the left a king sits on a throne under a canopy, wearing a crown. He is surrounded by soldiers and attendants, and two men sit in the left foreground in conversation. In the centre a man in a blue robe seems to address the king. To his right is a group of soldiers, including one who kneels at the lower right. The borders are composed of vases filled with flowers between small narrative scenes and figures, including figures of the evangelists at the four corners.
Full description
The tapestry was previously described as ‘Paul before Agrippa’, however this is unlikely because Agrippa was not a king and therefore not usually represented wearing a crown, and also because in this scene he is usually accompanied by his sister Berenice. (Helen Wyld, 2013)
