Summary
A Queen Anne plain cup and cover on a moulded foot with a rib around the body. The scroll handles are capped with leaves and the domed cover with a baluster finial. Engraved with two coats of arms on the body and a crest and coroneted cypher on the cover. Made by William Spring and dated 1708. The cover has been reshaped at a later date and patches have been placed behind the coats of arms.
Marks and inscriptions
This cup originally belonged to Sir Henry Bankes Father of Francis, Lady Brownlow and was used at the christening ceremony of nearly all the children of the First Lord and Lady Brownlow/It was given in 1847 to John, Earl Brownlow by his sisters The Hon Elizabeth and the Hon Lucy Cust to whom it had been devised by their grandmother, Lady Bankes (on base of cup).
