Summary
Oil painting on panel, Major Henry Francis Cockayne-Cust, MP (1819-1884) by Stephen Catterson Smith the elder (Skipton 1806 – Dublin 1872). A three-quarter-length portrait in the uniform of a Captain of the 8th Hussars, standing with left arm leaning against a ledge, head turned to the right. He was the son of the Reverend Hon. Henry Cockayne Cust (1780-1861) and Lady Anna Maria Elizabeth Needham (d.1866, the daughter of the 1st Earl of Kilmorey. He married Sara Jane Cookson (d.1867), daughter of Isaac Cookson of Meldon, Northumberland, on 5 August 1852. He changed his name from Cust to Cockayne-Cust. He gained the rank of Captain in the 8th Hussars and Major in the Shropshire Yeomany; was MP for Grantham and lived at Cockayne Hatley, Bedfordshire.
