Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Emmeline 'Nina' Mary Elizabeth Welby-Gregory, Mrs Henry John Cockayne-Cust (1867-1955) by The Hon. John Collier (London 1850 – Hampstead 1934), signed on a piece of canvas attached to the back of the portrait. A half-length portrait of a woman, turned to the right, gazing to the right, over her left shoulder, in a white dress. Better known as Nina Cust, daughter of Sir William Welby-Gregory, 4th Bt, of Denton, she was a draughtswoman, sculptress and author. Her husband Harry Cust (1861-1917), whom she married in 1893, was a hardened womaniser, who froze her out of his life and the circle of the 'Souls'. In spite of this she remained devoted to him, carving his tomb in Belton church and keeping a copy of the effigy in her drawing-room. .
