Summary
A carved giltwood stand, English, circa 1710.With deep carved frieze pierced and carved with putti, flower heads and acanthus, on scrolled legs carved with putti and foliage.
Full description
The stand was originally made for the Italian Lapis Lazuli cabinet (NT 435082) on its arrival to London in 1710. It is described in the Dining Room in the 1738 inventory at Arlington House, London 'A wrought gilt frame'. (James Weedon, November 2018)
Provenance
The stand may have been made or adapted for the lapis lazuli cabinet (NT 435082) at Belton and then adapted again for the Japanese export coffer (NT435120.1). Purchased by the National Trust at the Belton House sale organised by Sotheby's, 30 April - 2 May 1984, lot 108, with the help of a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
