Summary
Limewood, carved applique panel with floral swags, palm and monogram, Edmund Carpenter, 1688. An applique limewood carving mounted onto a Victorian oak panel. The carving is comprised of swags of flowers and acanthus, branches of palm and an intricately carved cresting piece showing the monogram of Sir John Brownlow (1690-1754).
Full description
A bill of March 1688 from Edmund Carpenter lists this panel as a ‘frees...wth yr cipher', charged at '£04-00-00' (four pounds). It was commissioned by Sir John Brownlow (1659-97) as part of the new furnishings for Belton House. The same bill also lists Carpenter's overmantel with fish, shells and game birds which is installed in the Marble Hall (NT 435033.2). Alice Rylance-Watson October 2018

Acquired 1688 by Sir John Brownlow; see bill of March 1688 from Edmund Carpenter. Purchased with a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) from Edward John Peregrine Cust, 7th Baron Brownlow, C. St J. (b.1936) in 1984.
