Summary
A gilt copper mounted black lacquer and parcel gilt and silvered coffer or chest, Japanese export, circa 1700. Raised on a giltwood stand, London, part mid 18th century, probably adapted from a mirror frame with later additions. The coffer with a slightly domed hinged lid, the exterior decorated in raised silver and gilt with flowering plants and rockwork mounted with shaped and engraved gilt copper angles, lockplate and handles. The interior black lacquer. The stand carved with winged griffins to the front corners crouching on naturalistic rock bases. The border with rocaille and scrolls and scrolled foliate back feet.

Purchased with a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) from Edward John Peregrine Cust, 7th Baron Brownlow (b.1936) in 1984.
