Summary
Cup (saucer missing), hard paste porcelain, cylindrical and with a squared handle, Fulda, Hesse, Germany, c. 1780–8, moulded with a relief portrait medallion of the ancient Athenian playwright Sophocles (c. 496–406 BCE) within a circular beaded border, surrounded by leaf garlands painted in gold and inscribed ‘SOPHOCLES’, marked in underglaze blue with a crown above ‘FF’.

Straight-sided cups were used in France for drinking both coffee and tea, while the British tended to use them specifically for coffee.
