Summary
Ewer, porcelain, of oviform body, tall neck and widening rim and spout, with a curved, rounded handle, made in Arita, Hizen Province, Japan, 1670–80, decorated in underglaze blue in the style of Chinese kraak porcelain of the late 16th to early 17th century with lobed and pointed panels with vignettes of flowering plants, separated by stylised pendants, with additional floral and foliate decoration on the neck and the handle and tri-lobed wish-fulfilling symbols (nyoi 如意) under the rim.
Full description
Possibly referred to in the 1754 Belton inventory, room no. 39 (presumed to be the Chapel Drawing Room) as one of ‘2 blue & white jugs’. A pair of similar Arita blue and white ewers is at Uppark, NT 137419.1-2.
