Summary

Oil painting on canvas, George, 7th Viscount Barrington of Ardglass, Baron Shute, PC (1824-1886) by Archibald James Stuart Wortley (1849-1905), Inscribed bottom right: George,/ Seventh Viscount Barrington/ MDCCCLXXVI/ Archd. Stuart Wortley, [1876]. Head-and-shoulders, profile to right, moustache and side whiskers, in dark blue military uniform with red and gold collar. On a leaf pattern background.

Full description

George Barrington, eldest son of the 6th Viscount & the Hon. June Liddell; succeeded his father in 1867. Conservative MP for Eye, 1866-80, Vice-Chamberlain of the Queen's Household, 1874-1880; Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard 1885, and of the Gentlemen-at-Arms, 1886. The artist was himself connected not only with the aristocracy, but with the world of politics, since his father, the Rt. Hon. James Archibald Stuart-Wortley (1805-1881), 3rd son of the 1st Baron Wharncliffe, was successively Recorder of the City of London and Solicitor-General (1856-57); whilst his younger brother, the Right Hon. Charles Beilby Stuart-Wortley, was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Home Office, 1885-86 & 1886-92. He was taught to paint by Millias, though when the latter first met him, "his chief interests seemed to be centred in guns and sketchbooks" ('Life and Letters'); so that it is not surprising that his oeuvre should include sporting subjects as well as portraits, nor that his most celebrated example of the latter should be W.G. Grace.

Provenance

According to a label on the back, recording Disraeli's own statement in his list of June 1879, when it hung on the Staircase, presented to Disraeli; 1881 inventory (no.132); given to the National Trust with Hughenden Manor by the Disraelian Society, 1947
