Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Montagu William Lowry-Corry, Baron Rowton (1838-1903) by Baron Henrich von Angeli (Sopron, Oldenburg, Hungary 1840 – Vienna 1925), signed and dated top right H v Angeli 1877. A half-length portrait of the second son of the Right Hon. Henry Thomas Lowry-Corry, second son of Somerset, 2nd Earl Belmore and Lady Harriet Anne Ashley-Cooper, second daughter of the 6th Earl of Shaftesbury, turned slightly to the right, facing, gazing at the spectator, full beard, black coat. He was created Baron Rowton in 1880. Private Secretary to Benjamin Disraeili from 1866 until the latter's death; unmarried.
Provenance
Recorded by Disraeli's list of June 1879 as the second picture on the Staircase, immediately after that of Byron in the same position in the 1881 inventory (no. 133); but in the Illustrated London News article of 22 April 1893, p. 498, as on the second flight of the stairs, reserved for Disraeli's "most intimate friends and colleagues."; given to the National Trust with Hughenden Manor by the Disraelian Society, 1947
