Large ‘lozenge’ (diamond or rhombus) shaped funeral hatchment depicting the arms of Shirley, Devereux, Ferrers, Hugh Lupus, Earl of Chester, Bourchier, Plantagenet, Bohun, Washington and Weston. In oil on canvas with a wooden frame painted black and with a gilded sight edge. Described in Hatchments in Britain, volume 8, p. 75: Dexter background black. Qly of eight, 1st, Shirley, but no badge of Ulster, 2nd, Devereux, 3rd, Vairy or and gules (Ferrers), 4th, Azure a wolf’s head erased argent (Hugh Lupus, Earl of Chester), 5th, Bourchier, 6th, Plantagenet, 7th, Azure a bend argent cotised or between six lions rampant or (Bohun), 8th, Washington, impaling, Per chevron azure and or, in base an eagle displayed sable on a chief embattled or three roundels gules (Weston). Viscount’s coronet. Crest: A Saracen’s head couped at the neck proper wreathed at the temples or and azure. Motto: Malgre L’Envie [In spite of envy]. Supporters: Dexter, A talbot ermine eared gules ducally gorged gules. Sinister, a reindeer gules billetty argent, attired and ducally gorged or. All on a mantle gules and ermine. Skull below. For Robert William Shirley, Viscount Tamworth, born 24 February 1783, married Anne Weston, daughter of Richard Weston, on 12 December 1821 and died 3 February 1830. Anne died 7 October 1839.
