Large ‘lozenge’ (diamond or rhombus) shaped funeral hatchment containing a central shield depicting the arms of sixteen families, one unidentified. Oil on canvas with a painted wooden frame with a gilded sight edge. Described in Hatchments in Britain, volume 8, pp. 74ꟷ5: Sinister background black. Qly of twelve, 1st, Ply of six or and azure a quarter ermine, the Badge of Ulster (Shirley), 2nd, Barry of eight or and azure ( ), 3rd, Gules a chevron argent between three garbs or (Waldsheafe), 4th, Azure a lion rampant between eight cross crosslets or (Braose), 5th, Or three piles in point gules, on a canton argent a griffin sergeant sable (Bassett), 6th, Vairy argent and sable a canton gules(Staunton), 7th, Argent three wolves passant in pale sable (Lovett), 8th, Argent a few and in chief three roundels gules (Devereux), 9th, Argent a cross engrailed gules between four water bougets sable (Bourchier). 10th, Gules billetty or a fess argent (Louvain), 11th, Qly France and England a bordure argent (Plantagenet), 12th, Argent two bars and in chief three molets gules (Washington), impaling, Qly, 1st, Azure a chevron between three hanks of cotton argent (Cotton), 2nd, Or an eagle’s leg erased, on a chief indented azure a molet between three leaves vert a chief sable (Shabery), 4th, Gules a chevron between three owls proper (Sleigh). Countess’s coronet. Motto: honor virtutis praemium [Honour is the reward of virtue]. Supporters: Dexter, A talbot ermine eared gules ducally gorged or. Sinister, A reindeer gules billetty, attired and ducally gorged or, a horseshoe argent pendent below coronet. For Catherine, daughter of Rowland Cotton of Etwall, who married Robert Shirley, 6th Earl Ferrers on 26 December 1753. She died 16 March 1786. He died 17 April 1787.
