Oil painting on plaster, Apollo abducting a Nymph by Sir James Thornhill (Melcombe Regis 1675 - Stalbridge 1734) Dining Room painted ceiling: The smaller painting shows the North Wind, Boreas, whose draughty story was fitting for the lobby leading out to a north east facing courtyard. The ceiling painting above what was once the withdrawing room, surrounded by original plasterwork is thought to depict Aurora, a goddess of the dawn, encouraing Apollo, the Sun god, to ride his chariot across the heavens and bring daylight to the earth.
