Summary
Newel post. Figure at top of a striding figure of a bearded man wearing a mail collar and slashed breeches with long two-handed sword. c.1620's. 4 carved panels below - a lady with a lute; an indian mask; an indian mask; and a man in breeches holding a staff. Lower carved panels, early C17 - musical instruments of the period; emblems of the night - a bat, torches and a lantern on a hanging brazier. Nail holes in base suggest it has been moved from another position.
Provenance
Part of the Lothian Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust by Philip, 11th Marquess of Lothian (1882-1940)
