This enormous Axminster carpet, which was made for the room, includes a mixture of both old-fashioned and up-to-date motifs. The floral centrepiece harks back to the 1770's whereas the border contains elements from Palladian ceilings of the mid 18th century.
Summary
Carpet. Axminster, circa 1770. Made for this room. Red guilloche border resembles a Palladian ceiling of mid C18;,while the centrepiece of garlands, bouquets and large rosettes are reminiscent of the 1770's.
Provenance
Part of the Lothian Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust by Philip, 11th Marquess of Lothian (1882-1940).
