Summary
Oil painting on panel, Queen Elizabeth I (1533–1603), British (English) School, 16th century. A three-quarter-length portrait, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a white dress with black and red jewels and pearls. Holding a pearl-decorated fan in left hand with red ribbon attached to bodice. Right hand holding three ropes of pearls. A single rope of pearls knotted around neck and a pearl choker. Red, black and pearl drop earring. Jewelled cap with tiara and red and black jewels and pearls in fair hair. Three-strand pearl bracelet on left wrist, two-strand pearl bracelet on right wrist. Ruffed collar with reticella lace and two pink lace, and more lace across top of bodice and around cuffs. Heart-shaped frame of wired pearls at back of head. Chair at left with finial. Gilt label on frame 'Queen Elizabeth I, Zucchero'. Derived from the Ditchley portrait of around 1591.
