Summary
Print, mezzotint. Arthur Murphy (1727-1805) (after Sir Nathaniel Dance-Holland RA) by William Ward the Elder, RA (London 1766 – London 1826). Man seated at table with legs crossed, looking to his left. Dark coat and trousers, white jabot and cuffs, and waistcoat, white curled wig. Table covered with dark cloth with book open, left hand resting on it, the right about to turn the page. Printed beneath the picture 'N Dance', 'W Ward sculpt'. Black frame, gilt slip, mounted and glazed.
Provenance
Part of the Courtauld-Thomson bequest of 1943, and transferred from Dorneywood via Queen Anne's Gate to Blickling Hall in 1989.
