The sitter was the daughter of James Edward William Theobald Butler, 3rd Marquess of Ormonde and Lady Elizabeth Harriet Grosvenor. She married Lt.-Gen. Sir Reginald Pole-Carew, son of William Henry Pole-Carew and Frances Anne Buller, on 19 February 1901 and this portrait was probably painted at the time her marriage.
