Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Tower at Cotehele by Mary Martin. Described by the artist: "This oil was painted in 1976 to celebrate returning to my native Tamar Valley after seven years away studying art. I see it as a visionary landscape, both familiar and strange -- a picture of opposing emotions linked by the repeated motif of Cotehele's Tower -- a slightly disturbing element of mystery in the natural world. In the distance sunny ploughed fields of the estate are redolent of harvest -- an expansive countryside set against its protective backdrop of Morwell Rocks and Dartmoor. In the foreground the Tower is transformed by apocalyptic clouds -- the water threatens to overwhelm the land, and the rolling landscape is no longer immutable."
