Scene depicted on the 'Corbridge Lanx' (NT 347543) which depicts the shrine of Apollo at Delos, 1736. The engraving bears Duke of Somerset’s coat of arms, along with the inscription: 'The most noble Prince Charles, Duke of Somerset and Earl of Hertford, Viscount and Baron Beauchamp, de Haeche, Baron Seymour of Trobridge, Lord of the Honours of Cockermouth and Petworth, Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, Knight of ye most noble Order of the Garter, and one of ye Lords of his Majesties most honourable Privy Council & c. Drawn from the original piece of plate by William Shaftoe, which piece of plate is ____. This print being an exact representation of that most curious and valuable piece of antiquity in Base Relief in silver weighing abt. 148 ounces found in the year 1735, buried in ye lands by the River Tyne, in your Graces manor of Corbridge in ye county of Northumberland, supposed to have been made use of in some of the sacrifices to some Heathen Deity and to have been done above 2000 years, which represents the figures of Vesta, Apollo, Ceres, Minerva and Diana, with Hieroglyphics.
