Full description
Wheellock hunting rifle, German, c1660. Octagonal form rifled barrel of iron with a fluted sighting channel on the breech and barrel tang. The muzzle slightly flared. Rear sight with adjustable leafs and a brass blade fore-sight. The breech stamped with the letter H (makers mark?). Retained to the stock by 3 barrel pins. Wooden ramrod with decorative iron tip. Barrel length 91.5cm. Calibre 18mm. Walnut full stock, the straight butt formed with a cheek piece and inlaid overall with shaped and decorative iron plaques, together with wire in a scrolling pattern. The right side of the butt with a patch box with sliding cover, this also inlaid with an iron plaque of dragon form, together with wire decoration. Iron furniture comprising; buttplate, trigger guard formed with a long shaped finger grip and a decorative finial, fore-end cap and 1 ramrod pipe. Wheellock of flat form, engraved overall with foliage (faint). Pierced wheel cover, decorative finial to the dog-spring, the dog with pierced decoration to the head. Curved flash guard to pan. The pan-cover release button missing. Retained to the stock by 2 sidenails (1 Missing). Overall length: 122cm
