Summary
Oil painting in canvas, The Vision of Saint Edmund and Earl Leofric at Mass in Westminster Abbey by Rebecca Dulcibella Orpen Ferrers, later Mrs Edward Henege Dering (1830 – 1923). Rebecca Orpen was a talented amateur artist who married Marmion Edward Ferrers (1813-84) of Baddesley Clinton. She was prolific, working in both oil and watercolour, and much of her work remains in the house today. She and her husband lived at Baddesley with her aunt, Lady Chatterton and her husband, Edward Heneage Dering. They became known as ‘The Quartet’, revelling in art, history and their religion. On the death of their spouses, Rebecca and Edward Dering were married. The painting was given to the Poor Clares Convent at Baddesley Clinton before 1923 by Rebecca. The convent was closed in January 2011 and the contents sold. Due to the artist living at Baddesley Clinton and the painting remaining in the local vicinity it was decided to acquire it for Baddesley Clinton.
