Summary
Oil painting on panel, The Virgin and Child with the Infant John the Baptist, by Rebecca Dulcibella Ferrers Orpen, later Mrs Edward Dering (1830 – 1923), 1877. Painted on the oval recessed centre of the panel, the edge painted in gold leaf. The Virgin sits on a throne clothed in blue, a red robe showing underneath. The Christ child stands on her knee, his right hand raised. An angel stands to the left holding the child's right foot. The halos of the three figures and the trimming on the Virgin's cloak are painted in gold leaf. A red/orange dossal hangs behind the throne and is entwined with orange-coloured roses. In the background is a landscape with distant mountains.
