Summary
A walnut, crossbanded and feather-banded bureau cabinet, English, circa 1730. The upper section with a cavetto cornice and a pair of doors with slightly arched bevelled mirrors, enclosing adjustable shelves with veneered front edges and above pull-out candle-slides, the lower section with a sloping lid enclosing a fitted interior of pigeonholes and small stepped drawers flanking a central cupboard and secret compartments, the writing surface lined with green leather, all above a well concealed behind a dummy drawer and with three further long drawers below, on bracket feet, the handles not original, remains of a paper label to the back 'Marmion Edw'd Ferrers, Baddesley Clinton' below his coat of arms and motto SPLENDEO TRITUS. CONTAINS MERCURY
