Summary
An oak press cupboard, Gloucestershire, circa 1620. Profusely carved overall, the upper section with leaf-carved cornice and meandering leafy cable frieze and corbels, raised on ribbed and leaf-carved bulbous columns, the pair of doors with recessed panels flanking an arcaded panel, all with rosette-filled lozenge decoration, the lower section enclosed by a pair of triple-panel doors, the twin lower panels of each door with rosette-filled motifs, the chain-carved frieze and s-gouge uprights of convex outline, standing on stile feet with lattice apron, the interior with white paper lining and the original shelves, the sides with plain panels. The attribution to Gloucestershire is based on the leafy cable detail to the frieze and the 's' gouge to the uprights, both convex in profile and characteristic details found on Gloucestershire and Somerset furniture. The overall profuse carving is typical of the West Country in general. Comparable detail can be seen on examples in 'Oak Furniture, The British Tradition', ACC 1979 and 2016, Fig. 4:83 - 4:93.
