Summary
Ceramic, Staffordshire, William Shakespeare (1564-1616), Staffordshire Pottery. Full-length Staffordshire figures of William Shakespeare and two others, possibly characters from the plays. Shakespeare standing, bare-headed, in cloak, doublet, breeches and stockings. Left forearm on three books on a pedestal, (left of the cloak). Hamlet ? sitting, in high-plumed hat, doublet, breeches and stockings, a cloak over his right shoulder; (right of the clock), Lady Macbeth? sitting, in crown, low-necked dress and cloak.
Provenance
part of collection built up by Thomas Balston (d.1967). He wrote about the collection in Staffordshire Portrait Figures of the Victorian Age, 1958.
