Summary

Ceramic figure, 'Sultan', 1854, Staffordshire. Modelled as Abdulmejid I (1823-1861), Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, standing, facing half-right, in fez, military frock-coat and trousers.

Provenance

part of collection built up by Thomas Balston (d.1967). He wrote about the collection in Staffordshire Portrait Figures of the Victorian Age, 1958.
