Ceramic, Staffordshire, The Reverend Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), Staffordshire Pottery. Full-length Staffordshire figure of The Rev. Charles Haddon Spurgeon, standing, bare-headed, in frock coat, low-cut waistcoat and trousers. Baptist preacher, came to London 1854 aged 20. Metropolitan Tabernacle, 6000 seats, built for him 7yrs later, preached there till his death.
Provenance
part of collection built up by Thomas Balston (d.1967). He wrote about the collection in Staffordshire Portrait Figures of the Victorian Age, 1958.
