Summary
Ceramic, Staffordshire, The Reverend Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), Staffordshire Pottery. Full-length Staffordshire figureof the Reverend Charles Haddon Spurgeon, standing in a pulpit, bare-headed. The outlines of the pulpit are stright lines instead of graceful curves and its base is solid instead of having two openings. Baptist preacher, came to London 1854 aged 20. Metropolitan Tabernacle with 6000 seats was built for him 7yrs later. Preached there till his death.
Provenance
part of collection built up by Thomas Balston (d.1967). He wrote about the collection in Staffordshire Portrait Figures of the Victorian Age, 1958.
