Summary
Ceramic, Staffordshire, Daniel O'Connell (1775-1847), Staffordshire Pottery. Full-length Staffordshire figure of Daniel O'Connell, standing in high broad-brimmed hat, frock coat and trousers. His left forearm leaning on a pedestal a paper in his right hand. Irish patriot. Chief agitator for Catholic Emancipation and Home Rule. Convicted of sedition 1844, acquitted on appeal.
Provenance
part of collection built up by Thomas Balston (d.1967). He wrote about the collection in Staffordshire Portrait Figures of the Victorian Age, 1958.
