Summary
Ceramic, Staffordshire, Anthony Ashley Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury (1801-1885) with a Child, Staffordshire Pottery. Full-length Staffordshire figures of the Earl of Shaftesbury, sitting, bare-headed, a small boy standing between his knees. Philanthropist (1801-85). In 1848 advocated the Ragged Schools. 'Eros' in Piccadilly Circus is a memorial to him.
Provenance
part of collection built up by Thomas Balston (d.1967). He wrote about the collection in Staffordshire Portrait Figures of the Victorian Age, 1958.
