Summary
Ceramic, Staffordshire, William Shakespeare (1564-1616), Staffordshire Pottery. Full-length Staffordshire figure of William Shakespeare, standing, bare-headed, in cloak, doublet, breeches and stockings. Right elbow on three books lying on a pedestal, a paper hangs from its top, right hand almost touching right cheek; left hand holds a book against his left hip, right leg crossed over the left at the knee.
Provenance
part of collection built up by Thomas Balston (d.1967). He wrote about the collection in Staffordshire Portrait Figures of the Victorian Age, 1958.
