Summary
Ceramic, Staffordshire, William Shakespeare (1564-1616), Staffordshire Pottery. Full-length Staffordshire figure of William Shakespeare, standing leaning against a square column, bare-headed in cloak, open jacket, long waistcoat, breeches and stockings. Right forearm on two books on a square pedestal; left forearm across his chest. Right leg (from a seperate mould) before his left leg. Probably made April 1864 when Garibaldi first came to London, when Shakespeare's tercentenary was celebrated.
Provenance
part of collection built up by Thomas Balston (d.1967). He wrote about the collection in Staffordshire Portrait Figures of the Victorian Age, 1958.
