Summary
Ceramic, Staffordshire, Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882), Staffordshire Pottery. Full-length Staffordshire figure of Giuseppe Garibaldi. Standing, bare-headed, in shirt and trousers. Right hand on sword hilt, left holding a paper. A cloak over left forearm, which rests on a round pedestal. Probably made April 1864 when Garibaldi first came to London, when Shakespeare's tercentenary was celebrated.
Provenance
part of collection built up by Thomas Balston (d.1967). He wrote about the collection in Staffordshire Portrait Figures of the Victorian Age, 1958.
