Summary
Ceramic, Staffordshire, Princess Alice Maud Mary, later Grand Duchess of Hesse-Darmstadt and Duchess of Saxony (1843–1878) and her husband Prince Louis later Grand Duke Louis IV of Hesse (1837-1892), Staffordshire Pottery. Full-length Staffordshire figures of Princess Alice of Hesse and Prince Louis of Hesse. The Princess standing in a low round plumed hat, hanging sleeves, looped-up overskirt and large muff. To her right Prince Louis of Hesse standing, bare-headed and moustached (in the mould) in knee-length jacket, waistcoat and strapped trousers. His left arm round her shoulders and a cloak over his right forearm.
Provenance
part of collection built up by Thomas Balston (d.1967). He wrote about the collection in Staffordshire Portrait Figures of the Victorian Age, 1958.
