Summary
Bibliographic description
[72] leaves : Ills, diagrams (woodcuts) ;. fol. Running number: 1793. Imperfect: Wanting leaf b1. Volume contains two different editions of the Fasciculum, both printed by Quintell in Cologne one year apart. The 1479 edition runs continuously from leaf f1 recto and then sporadically. From gathering “g”, the 1480 edition is used. The two must have been bound together intentionally, as decorations run throughout seamlessly. Different typefaces used for the two editions. 1479 edition: leaves b2r-e10v; f2; f5; f6; f9; 1480 edition: f1; f3; f4; f10; leaves g1r-i6v. Foliation introduced by hand at the end at the bottom of the page, now lost to trimming, one example survives on leaf i4 recto. Decorations: Red lombards used throughout. Foliation in Roman numerals at the top of the page in red ink (fifteenth-century). Two major initials: [1] leaf b2 recto, major initial “G” of “Generac[i]o et g[e]n[e]ratio” (7 lines); [2] leaf b2 verso, parted initial “I” of “In principio” in red and yellow (12 lines), finished with a blue outline. Highlighted initials and paragraph marks in red throughout. Decorative woodcuts, some of which are coloured in; on leaf d5 recto and verso, and d6 verso. Provenance: unknow owner, note on leaf b2 r, lower right-hand margin: “Sum Jo[hann]is Alb: ††† A[nn]o 1696”, added in by the same hand who covered up the previews owner’s name “A[nn]o “[1]?08”; library of Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742) of Nocton, Lincolnshire. Binding: eighteenth-century full mottled calf over bevelled wooden boards; border of a triple blind fillet; sewn into six supports; spine heavily gilt in seven compartments with circular stamp and fillet decorations; second compartment with gilt title label and fillet frame: “FASCICULU / TEMPORUM”; endband in place, headband loose on one side; textblock edges painted red.
