Manuscript note on first front endleaf: "M." [i.e. catalogue code of John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Ellys], continued "Coll. & P." [i.e. 'collated and perfect']. Noted as 'finely illuminated' in Mitchell's catalogue. Mitchell's manuscript code at foot of front endleaf: "A-a-¹ [i.e. A-alpha-¹" = A-Greek number 1-¹]. Eighteenth-century price on first front endleaf: "3-3-0". Seventeenth-century(?) mark in red crayon on lower pastedown: "A280". Binding: seventeenth-century full calf over boards (worn) with triple gilt border and triple gilt frame with square fleuron cornerpieces. Gilt roll pattern on board edges and turn-ins; six raised bands; gilt tooled spine with gilt title and name of patron (Louis XIV) on brown goatskin labels; two-colour thread woven to form double endbands; six supports laced in; comb pattern marble pastedown and conjugate endleaf with additional plain endleaves; red and brown sprinkled edges.
