Inserted between back flyleaf and pastedown: 19cm dried vine leaf, folded. Provenance: in ink on front flyleaf verso: 'Caroline Upcher from her affectionate friend Hannah Buxton 1863', possibly Lady Hannah Buxton (Gurney) (1783 - 1872), mother of Priscilla Johnston. Binding: nineteenth-century red-brown cloth over boards, black fillets to form a border, gilt spine lettering. Brown endpapers.
Provenance
Acquired by the National Trust in 1986 with the aid of bequests from E.L. Elliot, H. Ridler, D.E. Swiffen and Alice M. Weeks, grant-aid from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the Countryside Commission and funds raised by the East Anglian Coast & Countryside Appeal, and an endowment from Mildred Cordeaux, a cousin of Thomas Upcher.
