Bookseller's mark in blue ink on front flyleaf recto. Vol. 1: remnants of 4cm piece of white paper glued to front pastedown, back pastedown paper torn. Vol. 2 Upper boards stained. Damage to edges of pages 334-335, 382-386 and 446-455. Pages 448-449, 452-453 and 600-back flyleaf recto and back flyleaf verso-back pastedown damaged and stuck together. Vols. 4 and 5: Binder's stamp in purple ink on front pastedown: 'Bound by C. H.[?] Lansdown 10 Whitechapel Rd'. Vol. 4: Pencil marks on page 576. Vol. 5: between pages 564 and 565, large folded coloured plate torn into 3 pieces, with multiple smaller tears. Binding: nineteenth-century green cloth over boards, illustrated and lettered in black on upper boards. Black and gilt-ruled spine, gilt lettering. Gilt edges. Vol.1 : yellow endpapers. Vols. 2 and 3: pale green and white floral end papers. Vols. 4 and 5: pale brown endpapers.

Acquired by the National Trust in 1986 with the aid of bequests from E.L. Elliot, H. Ridler, D.E. Swiffen and Alice M. Weeks, grant-aid from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the Countryside Commission and funds raised by the East Anglian Coast & Countryside Appeal, and an endowment from Mildred Cordeaux, a cousin of Thomas Upcher.
