Provenance: front pastedowns feature an armorial bookplate featuring: a tablet shield with a smaller central shield featuring three horses' heads, a triple bend with two scallop shells, ermine fur, formy crosses at sinister chief and dexter base, motto 'Providentia Divina Repono' on a banner, a dragon crest with a formy cross on each wing and a scallop shell on the chest; pencil and ink inscriptions including that of W. T. Blathwayt [= Rev. Wynter Thomas Blathwayt (1824-1909)] with dates including May 6 and 1845. Binding: eighteenth-century marbled tan leather over boards; gold tooling to board edges and simple gold tooling to spine; red leather spine label with 'Russell's Modern Europe' lettered in gold; circular leather spine labels with volume number.
