Summary
Bibliographic description
2 v. in 1 ([16], 253, [111], 28, [40]; [4], 46, [16], 20, [74] p., [2] leaves of plates) : ill., maps, ports. ; fol. Running number: 7872. State (Rahir 112) without imprint on vol. 1 title-plate or portrait of Bertius on leaf *1v. Without additional map "Scheda posterior". Provenance: eighteenth-century manuscript letter attached to front fly-leaf, on the origin of the notes in the printed text in this edition of Theatrum geographiae veteris, reading: "Hon. Sr. This waits upon you with your Bertius's Ptolemy. I have examined many of the mss readings, and can't but think several of them preferable to the printed ones and particularly as to Britain. It came too late for Mr. Horsley's book, otherwise it might have been of service there. ... I am sensitive I have kept your book longer than I ought to have done. But I hope you will please to excuse it, since it has been occasioned by my being out of town in an evening for my health a great part of the time. I am now going into the country for a few weeks, and at my return shall do myself the honour to wait on you, ... J. Ward. G.C. the 19. Augt. 1732". The letter is from the antiquary John Ward (1679?-1758), who lived at Gresham College ("G.C."), to Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742); Ward borrowed the book from Ellys, in whose library it remains. Manuscript note in eighteenth-century hand on recto of front fly-leaf: "The Msst [i.e. manuscript] notes seem to be like ye hand of Bp Pearson". Manuscript marginal annotations in Greek with some Latin and underscoring of text on leaves A2-Z1 (pp. 4-253); these notes are the ones supposed to be in the hand of Bishop Pearson, i.e. John Pearson (1613-1686), Bishop of Chester. Extensive manuscript notes and references (by John Pearson?) in Greek with some Latin on rear fly-leaves and pasted-in folded leaf. Manuscript capital letter at head of front fly-leaf: "S.". Nineteenth-century manuscript former shelfmark in pencil on front pastedown: 33.A.7. Binding: eighteenth-century full plain parchment over boards; rebacked in calf (nineteenth-century?); gilt title on green goatskin label and date on spine.
