Orientation: VerticalText Substrate: handmade laid paperInk/Pigment: manuscript inks of varying colour and intensityType: BOUND BOOK Binding Type: Uncertain Date of Binding: mid-17th century? Binder's Name: Unknown End Leaves: tipped single-fold of plain, white laid paper, the outer leaf pasted to the board over an earlier pastedown of marbled paper. Structure: British (bound by Hering?)Edges: plain-cut and sprinkled with red and brown pigment, polished Spine Lining: moderate round, no joints (the covering leather is creased into a sort of joint groove), overall lining of ms document parchment. End Bands: There is a worked stuck-on headband, worked L-R 2x2 in green silk thread, through a parchment lining, the joints adhered to the outside of the boards before covering.Bookmark: None Boards: 4mm paper boardsCovering: heavily grained red, tanned goatskin, tied up across the caps and one side of the bands. Tooling Spine: gold-tooled decorated frame in each panel, titled direct in panel 2, the rest with corner and centre toolsTooling Sides: Furniture: NoneEnclosure: NoneBinding Notes: The structure ofthis book is very puzzling and requires careful inversigation and recording during the conservation work.

Provenance: manuscript title on fol. 2r: "Le Satire di Bartolomeo Dotti", written by John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742), the owner of the manuscript. Binding: removed from original binding due to water damage (damage occurred in 2001). Resewn in limp off-white paper case. Original binding of red grained tanned goatskin retained, originally sewn on six single raised cord supports; spine gold-tooled with decorative frame in each panel and title 'Satire del Cau. Dotti', marbled paper pastedowns, parchment spine linings containing manuscript text; red and brown sprinkled textblock edges. All stored in drop-back box, red leather case below and resewn manuscript above, with plastazote packing and parchment spine linings in polyester pocket.
