Summary
Bibliographic description
[8], xx, 528, [58] p. ; 8vo. Running number: 7763. Sir Richard Ellys's copy of the Hoym auction catalogue, a sale at which he bought a number of books. Annotated with prices realised throughout, presumably in livres and sous; with some additional annotations. Provenance: manuscript initial on front fly-leaf: "M." [i.e. catalogue code of John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742)]. The annotated prices and notes throughout appear to be in the hand of John Mitchell. With occasional pencil crosses and other marks in the margins against certain books, perhaps denoting books in which Richard Ellys had a particular interest or was bidding for. Binding: eighteenth-century half-bound calf with comb and swirl pattern marbled paper over boards; sewn on three supports; five raised bands; gilt title 'Catalogus Biblioth Comit de Hoym' lettered onto spine; red sprinkled textblock edges.
