Provenance: Autograph letter of introduction by the author, dated 12 January 1890, pasted onto flyleaf: 'To any and every friend / of mine in America I / beg leave to introduce and / cordially commend my / friend and London neighbor / Mr Courtauld Thomson [i.e. Lord Courtauld-Thomson (1865-1954)] ... Justin McCarthy', envelope for this letter pasted in at the end; Courtauld-Thomson's armorial bookplate with motto: Fortiter aut suaviter; black ink stamp: The National Trust founded 1895; this book has a print dedication to Courtauld Thomson on p. v: My Dear Courtauld, You showed me the actual existing 'Riddle Ring', told me the story of its chance discovery, and explained your reading of the letters and figures on it. You suggested to me to start a story from the discovery ...; a gold ring matching the description in McCarthy's novel is threaded on pale ribbon down the hollow spine of this volume.
